What You Should Know About Spay and Neuter

Spay and neuter is a medical procedure used to control pet populations. Pet owners often elect to have their dog or cat spayed or neutered to prevent unwanted pregnancy and reduce the possibility of euthanization of animals that do not get adopted. In addition, a pet that is spayed or neutered may benefit from:

• The elimination of the heat cycle;
• Reduced aggressive behavior;
• Less tendency to roam far from the home; and
• A lowered risk of cancer in the reproductive system.

Pre- and Post-Surgery Considerations

Before a spay and neuter service, you should not have fed your pet for some hours prior to the procedure. Post-surgical aftercare includes providing a safe area where your pet can rest undisturbed, having them wear an Elizabethan collar to allow for faster healing, limiting their movement and overexertion, and keeping them dry for 10 days after surgery. You should also monitor the incision site daily and see that the area does not look infected or inflamed.
